I have facilitated many adults for young adults and would be happy to have a conversation sometime. A few concepts:
*I schedule in the evening to accommodate work/school.
*I define it as 18-30 years old. Sometimes I allow (after a prescreen) some people in their early 30s. General loss; about 75% are typically parent loss.
*I include topics that are relevant to that age demographic: lack of peer support, changing family dynamics, significant milestones, grief education, coping (even creating space to discuss substance use), caregiving at a young age, meaning making.
*The young adults often said they wish their best friend could accompany them to realize that the participant is doing grief in a normal way, so we developed Bring a Buddy Night, where they each bring a friend. The group participants run the program with things they wish their friends knew or ways their best friends could support them in more meaningful ways. It's incredible!
*Typically I've done eight week in-person groups. I modified for a four-week zoom group during the pandemic but am not sure what is on the horizon.
*I often assign a short article from an online grief resource and encourage them to follow those sites on social media -- such as Modern Loss and What's Your Grief.
Best of luck! Feel free to be in touch.

Subject: Young Adult Support Groups
Hello Bereavement Professionals,
We are looking into approaches to hosting young adult grief support groups in a way that is open to folks outside of a college setting. Has anyone hosted young adult grief support groups in the past or present? Any key pieces that you think make it successful, or considerations you find are helpful? If you have hosted such groups, do you specialize them to the type or loss, or keep it more broad? (For example, young adults who have lost a partner/spouse vs. young adults who are grieving in general)
We look forward to hearing your experiences! Thank you
