My initial response is below, and in reflection I wish to take an opportunity to be sure to clarify:
Alan Wolfelt (not William Wolfelt) https://www.centerforloss.com/)
It is also helpful to distinguish between a certificate in bereavement and certification. Two different things. Bereavement Professionals can get a certificate after paying money and taking a certain number of courses in bereavement – like with Alan Wolfelt's Center for Loss, as they are one of many examples of a group or organization that offers a certificate that can be achieved in this manner. However, a certificate is different from being certified in the field. Bereavement Professionals who study for and pass an exam to become certified as a thanatologist means they have proven they have certain level of knowledge as verified by the exam, such as the case for the Association of Death Education and Counseling's Certification in Thanatology. Hopefully this is helpful to highlight the difference between the two paths (certificate v certification).
Best thoughts to those in pursuit of and those in support of others in growth! Thank you to colleagues in the field for inquiring about this!

Hello!
Great question that comes up frequently. The employee should have evidence of specific training but there is no specific set or venue that a surveyor is looking for. Well recommended are certificate programs in some schools of social work, as well as specific workshops and conferences through groups like NHPCO and SWHPN. I highly recommend the Association of Death Education and Counseling certificate in thanatology as an EXCELLENT resource that goes through considerable rigor to ensure those who attend their conference, use their recommended study materials, and take their exam, are really accessing the highest quality of information. I know of folks whom have attended William Wolfelt's center in CO and found that helpful. Most of the counselors on my team are encouraged to not only already have training but to continue to pursue ongoing specialized training throughout their tenure such that they may continue in their growth and bring an eclectic and expansive skill set to the table. What are trainings others are familiar with?
