    Hello, Bereavement Colleagues:

I hope you are doing well these challenging days.

I am wondering if anyone has any data on your clients' utilization of bereavement counseling by race/ethnicity. What percentage of your Asian/Latinx/African American/Native American hospice family members use grief counseling services? Or what percentage of your grief counseling clients are of these racial backgrounds?

I am trying to find this data for a presentation I'm giving. Might your agency collect this information?

    Thank you for your help,

    Isabel

There is, finally, only one thing required of us: that is, to take life whole, the sunlight and shadows together; to live the life that is given us with courage and humor and truth. We have such a little moment out of the vastness of time for all our wondering and loving. Therefore let there be no half-heartedness; rather, let the soul be ardent in its pain, in its yearning, in its praise. Then shall peace unfold our days, and glory shall not fade from our lives. –Kendyl Gibbons

    Hola Isabel,

I had been collecting data since I started working for Hospice & Community Care in 2012. I could share the information with you. The collection of demographic information of our clients are important to determine the need of services. Helps you to inform your organization when planning services for those in the community. It also informs the organization of changes like the need for bilingual staff, translators, and materials in other languages. We know that Latinx, African American, and Asian communities are underserved by hospice. Informing yourself of the composition of the community helps when planning to serve those communities the outreach is very different.

I encourage everyone to look into your data collection and if you are not collecting demographic information specifically language and ethnicity you should. We can't ignore their needs, not only to overcome language barriers but also to create an environment that is one of understanding of the cultural differences when providing care of EOL.
