If you have a bereavement program that serves community are you billing 3rd party payers (Medicare, private insurance) for grief counseling?  If anyone has any experience or information, I would appreciate hearing about it.  From time to time, we consider how that would work in our program and if it is feasible or even something that we want to consider.  Thank you.

    Hello,

I see this is an older thread, but would anyone be willing to share information on this subject? Billing for grief counseling individuals, and possibly groups?

    Thank you,

    Amelia

First of all, we can not charge a fee for any hospice bereaved because the bereavement services are part of the Medicare CoP's, ie we are obligated to provide this as part of the hospice care and payment we received for the patient. In my experience most hospices found that the time and effort involved in attempting to obtain some degree of payment from community bereaved made minimal difference and actually cost money to do, given the time involved from the finance department. Our organization has intentionally not gone this direction and emphasizes that because our hospice is so well supported by our local commmunity's fund raising efforts, the bereavement services we provide are our gift back to the community.
