October Integrative & Rehabilitation Therapies, CNA and Nurse Combined Communities Chat

Title: Where Are All the Occupational Therapists in End-of-Life Care?

Occupational therapy intervention is holistic and person-centered and can enhance quality of life. Even so, occupational therapy is underutilized in hospice and palliative care. Join us for this chat as we explore the role of occupational therapy, provide clinical examples of the value of occupational therapy at end-of-life and offer practical solutions towards interprofessional collaborative practice. Occupational therapy facilitates participation in activities that matter to patients (clients) leading to improved patient and caregiver satisfaction and can promote a good death experience.

Presented by:  Ann M. Henshaw OTR/L, MPH, MBA.  Ann Henshaw is an occupational therapist with extensive clinical experience across diverse patient populations, with a focus on end-of-life care. She is currently exploring the intersection between the rehabilitation and palliative care departments at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital and looking for ways to support interprofessional collaborative practice among these disciplines. Ann has an MBA and MPH and has worked as a healthcare consultant on quality improvement implementation projects and revenue enhancement plans across large and small hospital systems. Ann is currently a doctoral candidate at the MGH Institute of Health Professions with a focus on the role of occupational therapy in end-of-life care. She is passionate about redesigning the care experience for terminally ill patients and families to include holistic care and meaningful engagement in desired activities for as long as possible.
