Diversity in Hospice & Palliative Bereavement Care Models (Chat Slides & Recording)

March 2019 Bereavement Professional Section Chat

Hospice and palliative care organizations frequently staff, organize and provide their bereavement programs and services in unique ways to fit their particular needs. Many ask single individuals to wear multiple hats, bereavement being one, and many others have a single individual tending to all things bereavement, while others have adopted other unique variations.

This monthly chat explored a variety of staffing models for the provision of bereavement services, expanded your understanding of the strengths and challenges inherent in different models of bereavement care, and we discussed the opportunities for and benefits of partnership both within and outside of your organization.

Facilitated by:
Joelle Osterhaus, MSW, LCSW, LICSW, ACHP-SW, NCHPP Bereavement  Professional Section Steering Committee Member, Hospice & Home Based Palliative Care Psychosocial Services Supervisor, Kaiser Permanente Continuing Care, Portland, OR

Jennifer Martin, LCSW, C-ASWCM, ACHP-SW, NCHPP Social Work Section Steering Committee Member, Director of Psychosocial, Bereavement, and Community Grief Community Hospice and Palliative Care, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Jacksonville, FL

This presentations gave people an opportunity to share their experience. However, I'm not sure what the intention was for this - was it to encourage one model or another? or set boundaries/expectations for the role? Because people can read the chats themselves, why read them aloud instead of discussing the role and importance of Bereavement in general, no many how many jobs you do? The mixed role I perform, BV, Spiritual Care and Volunteer Coordination in a small rural non-profit hospice provides a continuity of care and my experience in the field gives me particular skills/insights to share in the 12-16 hr Volunteer training I provide.
