I was recently asked by a local church about resources they could use to start a grief support group. They had actually wanted me to start one in their facility, but I already have one going at our city's sr. center.

Aside from Grief Share do you know of any other "plug and play" type of curriculums they could look into? I'd love to help them get started by sending some suggestions there way.

I'm not sure if they are looking at this being an ongoing group or for a defined 8, 10, or 12 weeks.

    Any ideas are appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hi Joel,
I had a similar situation with a local church and ended up creating my own "training", if you will. It focuses a lot on basic grief education before going into group dynamics. I used a few resources to inform my work including The Understanding Your Grief Support Group Guide by Alan Wolfelt, Ph.D., and Setting Up and Facilitating Bereavement Support Groups: A Practical Guide by Dodie Graves. Feel free to email me directly if you would like to see what I used for the training itself.

For churches another plug in grief support group is Good Grief, which is a workbook that goes with the Book.

People mentioned Wolfelt - he has a journal that is a companion of the Understanding Your Grief Ten Essential Touchstones for Finding Hope and Healing that  is good. Also MaryLou Hughes' book Bereavement and Support Gropu Healing in a Group Environment offers weekly outlines, objectives, activities for a curriculum series as well as info on unstructured bereavement support groups.

    Joel,

Dr. Alan Wolfelt has a 12 week "Understanding Your Grief" Support Group.  There is a leaders guide, and books & journals for participants.

    Hi Joel,
My entry into grief support groups back in 2008 was by Sr. Mauryeen O'Brien who created the New Day Journal, A journey from grief to healing. It has a worldwide following. (It can be found on Amazon)

I presented it at my church spring and fall, as a lay person and therapist in training, for 7 years before starting hospice work.  It can be used both in a group setting or self-study.  I trained many facilitator at that time as well under her tutelage.

It is a closed 10-week program that refers to scriptures and is journal based.  It was always well received.
