    Hello Bereavement Professionals!

Our bereavement department at my hospice is considering starting a new group; a more social coffee group. Does anyone else do or run a group like this? We would welcome any ideas, feedback, lessons learned, etc. :)

    Thank you!

    Kara

For years we have offered 3 different social options - Men's Breakfast, Ladies Lunch and Dinner Out. Each are once a month, the bereaved pay for their own meal and meat at a local restaurant. We are (finally!) resuming these now that the pandemic has lessened. We advertise them in our groups and our newsletter but have our trained bereavement volunteers be the contact person and coordinate them, simply reporting back to us about how it went.  Pre-covid we had more than 30 pretty regularly attending the dinner out!

    Hi Kara,

We have a coffee social group and lunch groups in a few areas of our county and find these to be very helpful.  They are great options for people who don't necessarily need a support group but just want to make friends with other grievers.  We've seen attendees connect well in these groups and get together on their own.

I run on-going weekly groups that are open conversation based on what people bring to group each week. the group literally starts with me asking "does anyone have anything to bring to the group this week?" and we build our conversation from there. The first started in Dec 2020 and I now run 3 different ones for different target audiences. I'm happy to talk with you about how I facilitate them if you are interested.

We are also exploring a group that is more informal, perhaps a dinner group for young widowers (2x/mo) and guided by a bereaved volunteer.
    • For your coffee groups, do you prescreen?
    • Do the grievers have to do an official group before this coffee group?
    • Does anyone have something like this that is volunteer-led instead of staff?  Tips?

Kara, great idea. We host a couple of meal groups. And a coffee group on Saturdays for young adults. They seem to be well received. Facilitated by volunteers.
