Hello All,
For those interested, the original post to access the survey was from July 12, 2022:
"Hello Bereavement Professionals!
On behalf of the MyNHPCO Bereavement Professionals Steering Committee, we would like to invite you to participate in a survey about YOU! Our goal is to gain a better understanding as a community of what bereavement programs across the country are like right now. This survey explores many topics of interest that YOU as community members frequently inquire from one another about within our discussion board and virtual chats, including but not limited to:
- background or licensing of the bereavement staff,
- who supervises your program,
- what kind of mailings do you have and when do you send them,
- what kinds of groups or counseling services do you offer,
- what kind of staffing model do you have, and
- how many staff per patient death or size of hospice?
If you come from a bereavement program with multiple professionals, we encourage you to submit only one survey per bereavement program.
The survey is simple and will only take a few minutes. Would you take a moment to share with us by Friday August 12, 2022? To access the survey, click on the link below or use the QR code provided:

Thank you for your time and contribution in advance. We look forward to sharing the information gathered from this survey with you all!"

Hello Bereavement Professionals Community!
Thank you so much for those of you who took the time to complete our community survey. Of note, NHPCO has 4197 member hospice locations. A this time, 1.9k individuals are enrolled in our MyNHPCO Bereavement Professional community. Of those members, only 33 completed the survey. An important caveat, the directions did say only one member per organization and we do not know how many of the individual members actually represent the total 4197 organizations. That being said, this information below still feels valuable and can provide us insights!
A few highlights we noticed, and we welcome other's reflections and follow up questions as well:
- Most of us work within bereavement teams – not alone.
- Most are managed by a social worker or counselor!
- Most continue to utilize snail mail but an increasing number are using email and social media.
- Most create their own mailing materials.
- Majority offer some kind of support groups – and top three most popular are general loss, then 'other', then spousal loss, followed by...movement based! Fascinating!
- Most utilize volunteers and that use is predominantly for mailings.
- The majority of programs have counseling services open to their community (non-hospice related deaths) – all of which are free. Typically each bereavement staff member is providing approx. 5 sessions/week.
- Most offer a remembrance service at least annually.
The details are below. Feel free to review and share your thoughts! How might we use this information? We will host a chat in the coming months to invite discussion around ways this information can be helpful to us in shaping our programs and beyond.
If you haven't yet replied to the survey but would still like to, you are most welcome to do so. If we get a considerable additional set of replies, or anything that shifts this data significantly over the next two weeks (by the end of August), we will circle back to share that here.
Thank you all!
