Hello. Wondering if anyone has had a Grief Retreat/Grief Camp for adults and how you approached it!

    thanks

We held an Adult Retreat for several years. It ran Friday afternoon through Saturday evening. Used a theme of looking at where people were (before the loss), where they are now, and where did they want to be (future). It was extremely meaningful for those who attended, and we averaged about 20, but, no different than running a weekend bereavement camp, it requires an inordinate amount of staff time to plan in advance, coordinate and hold. For that reason we eventually made the decision not to continue because, in this day and age, we really try to focus on how we can most efficiently and effectively provide the best services.

We did an adult retreat for two years in 2013 and 2014, very similar to Patti's except ours ran from Saturday midday until Sunday after lunch. It was a wonderful thing for those who attended. Because it was a "new" program, we could not absorb the costs, so we charged each registrant a little more than the retreat charged us per person for lodging, and we absorbed the balance of the food costs. The 2 registration options were $100 for a single room, or $50 per person to share a room. This included meals.

I attached the tentative outlines that I have saved to give you an idea of our structure. You will notice that the first year, 2013, had a fuller agenda than 2014. That was because feedback from the 2013 retreat clearly less structure and more free time. We agreed since it was a retreat for getting away.

It was difficult to continue this additional service with changing staff and continuing our regular programs. But any of you who have the heart for this, it is worth the effort. If you decide to start an adult retreat, I would suggest making it your annual signature event and building your other programs around that.

    Good luck!

I've thought about doing this as well, but wasn't sure where to even begin for developing it. I'd love to hear what/if/how others have done this. Like Patti said below, it might require too many resources to successfully pull it off.

I love designing and facilitating retreats...have done so for years...but it may be too much for our small community non-residential hospice

We run a retreat every year called the Heart of the Horse.  It's an all day event on a Saturday with horses done in collaboration with an organization call Spirit of Leadership.  It's extremely meaningful for those attending.  We can only take 20 folks and it fills up pretty quickly. I've attached a flyer.
