Bereavement Sympathy Cards

Hello everyone! I am a bereavement coordinator with a hospice agency in Nebraska. My team is looking for new sympathy cards to mail out to families after a patient's death. We currently order our cards from The Gallery Collection. They can get expensive so I figured it might be worth posting a question here to see other ideas. My last order of cards for 250 in quantity, totaled out to be $662.02. We like to use a professional look as it presents well rather than a store bought card.

Does anyone else use a website that has quality cards but at a cheaper price? Thank you for your time!!

This may not be for everyone but we purchased a Cricut and made our own, turned out to be much less expensive and more personal, especially for the individual mailings. For mass/group mailings we had volunteers that made the cards for us over the course of the year. We kept the design simple and now with the Cricut Joy, much more affordable.

Kendra: We have ordered off Amazon for much cheaper in the past; then we created a card from a private picture and had cards made through a local print shop. Might be worth looking into.

    Hi Christy,

Do you have any examples of the cards that were made with the Cricut or Cricut Joy?

Hi Kendra, our internal Communications Department created our cards and we have a printing house who retains and reprints as needed. That might be a less expensive option and cards can be short and simple.

Hello, Kendra!  Like Karen, our Hospice creates our own cards.  We use a local printer and feel good about supporting a community business.  We have 4 different designs and messages. The artwork for each card was done by one of our Hospice patients, who was an extremely talented artist.  Her parents granted us permission to use her artwork.  On the back of each card, the artist is recognized and thanked, which serves as an ongoing tribute to her and her family.  All in all, we think these cards are more meaningful than anything "store bought." We are lucky to have known this artist and her family.

Rather than a sympathy card, I personally sign each initial letter we send out to the bereaved after the death. It explains the transition from home hospice support to bereavement support,  and explains our hours and availability to them. We include our brochure as well as the current issue of our bereavement newsletter.

The hospice I worked for previously sent cards created through the marketing department and which were circulated through the IDT. I then signed each of the letters sent out for initial, 3, 6, 9, 12, 13.

My current hospice sends a card from the team and from the hospice (both purchased from an outside organization). We send Hope Through Healing letters and an internal insert for 3, 6, 9, and 12. A final letter goes out at 13.

Carenotes.com has nice sympathy cards and death anniversary cards that we have used.  They are about $1 a piece so not too bad.

I've also worked with an etsy seller who customized a deceased birthday card for us for under a dollar.

We currently have a print shop that makes a nice card with our logo and regional pictures.

For our publications we mainly use an internal printing service thus we have sympathy cards and all of our other mailings (letters and newsletters) come from them. We have the IDG team send a group-signed condolence card (albeit during COVID we are having one volunteer do so on behalf of the team) and then following that we send a letter introducing the program, signed by the bereavement team.

We worked with our Marketing department to create both cards and mailings (initial, 3, 6, 9, 12 mo and holiday) and have them printed in house.  They turned out beautifully and we've gotten a lot of nice feedback.  And it's much less expensive (if you have access to marketing and a print shop).

    Good luck!
