    Hello,

I am wondering if any of you provide bereavement counseling over the phone or Skype to bereaved family members of your hospice, who live out of state? I recognize providing out of state psychotherapy is not legal due to the fact that we are not licensed in the state where the client lives. But to me grief counseling is not psychotherapy. How do any of you reconcile this?

    I appreciate your thoughts.

We offer grief  SUPPORT to out of the area family members via phone if they desire. We don't call it counseling or therapy.

    Hi,

Bereavement support phone calls are part of our bereavement POC and the service is available to anyone with an open bereavement POC in our system, local or out state. To be sure however, the wording in our documentation is always clear: Bereavement support phone call..., or Bereavement phone call intervention as per bereavement POC... So far, no survey problems!

Hi - our bereavement coordinators often provide support (not counseling) over the phone to our out of town family members.

We provide our mailings to out-of-state clients and then I find a local hospice for them to participate in groups, etc. I urge them to connect with someone locally, but always offer to talk with them on the phone if they'd like. More often than not, they find local support to be enough.

    Hi Isabel.
What an interesting question. I would reconcile it just the way that you did! That you are not providing psychotherapy and instead just providing grief support.

Like the others, we offer phone support to anyone regardless of where they live and, when out of our area, also offer to help them find something closer locally. In addition we offer face to face support via Zoom but people rarely take us up on it.
