As an author and social worker, I have been leading "writing through loss" groups for the last 3 years. They are very successful with high demand, both with men and women (I believe it's because writing incorporates instrumental and intuitive grieving style). I create different curriculum each session. I discuss James Pennebaker's research on therapeutic writing, and then use the Amherst Artists and Writer's facilitation style (except I don't treat all writing as fiction!). Participants are encouraged to write at home and share their writing; we also have an in-group writing prompt. I initially modeled my group after Nancy Jakobbson and Veronica Patterson's  curriculum, and then adapted each group since. I have also modelled after Sharon Bray's work. I have a number of repeat participants but now prioritize "first-comers." Prompts include poems, brief youtube videos, objects brought from home, photographs, etc. We have some powerful writing with tears, but also laughter. It is the best part of my job as a bereavement counselor! - Isabel Stenzel MSW MPH
