Trauma Informed End of Life Care (Chat Slides & Recording)

In August's Bereavement Professional Section Chat we discussed how understanding trauma-informed care, assessment of trauma history and palliation of trauma-related symptoms are crucial elements for compassionate patient care in hospice and palliative care programs. In addition, incorporating trauma-informed end-of-life care has the potential to increase staff job satisfaction as well as retention.

Presenter Bios:

Leanna Anderson is a social worker and the Clinical Manager of Counseling Services & Allied Therapy at Hospice of the Northwest in Mount Vernon, WA. She serves as the Social Work Section Leader of the National Council of Hospice and Palliative Professionals.

Barbara Ganzel is a clinical social worker and research neuroscientist. She has 20+ years of experience in the study of psychological trauma and its impact on brain, body, behavior across the lifespan.  Barbara is currently Director of the Gerontology Institute and Associate Professor of Aging Studies at Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY. 

Scott Janssen is a social worker with Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell in Burlington, NC. A former editorial advisor for the magazine Social Work Today, he has published widely on topics ranging from clinical social-work practice to working with terminally ill patients who have unhealed psychological trauma. His book, Standing at Lemhi Pass - Archetypal Stories for the End of Life and Other Challenging Times, explores the uses of storytelling with terminally I'll patients and their families.
